KARACHI:
The recent incidents of stampedes and the loss of precious lives during ration and flour distribution drives across Pakistan are deeply concerning. The fact that these tragedies are a result of government mismanagement and apathy only adds insult to injury and begs the question of how many more breadwinners must lose their lives before meaningful action is taken.
Many middle-class families have been driven into poverty due to worsening economic circumstances including rising inflation, high unemployment, etc. These families must be supported by any means possible. It must be a difficult situation for those affected, as they may not have the same resources or support networks as those who have always lived in poverty, but they face many of the same struggles and hardships.
It is truly ironic that even in a charitable event meant to help the less fortunate, some individuals are still finding ways to line their pockets and exploit the generosity of others. It is a shame that people have been forced to endure severe difficulties just to get their hands on a bag of flour, which is a necessity for survival. The mismanagement and disorganisation at flour and ration distribution points are appalling. It shows the government’s disregard for the safety and well-being of the masses. In a country, where even the most basic needs of people are not met fairly and honestly, corruption is bound to become rampant and institutionalised because making a just living is unaffordable.
