Empower women

Letter April 05, 2023
Empower women

KARACHI:

In Pakistan, women are largely absent from social, economic, and political spheres. Although several Pakistani women now hold important positions or offices, they are still faced with gender discrimination and are not allowed to contribute to crucial decisions and policies.

The lack of women empowerment has raised risks and challenges for women across the country. Many young girls and women are in constant danger of honour killings due to conservative cultural norms and mindsets. A large proportion of women are still unable to acquire basic education and seek employment. Even women who do work in the formal and informal sectors lack agency and at times do not even have authority over their own hard-earned money. Many women in both rural and urban areas experience domestic violence. Unfortunately, most remain trapped in abusive marriages due to a lack of state support and regressive norms.

Pakistan’s failure to empower and protect women is one of the main reasons for the country’s overall low progress and development. High literacy rates among the female population not just contribute to the economy, but also help alleviate societal issues such as a burgeoning population, low literacy levels, etc. Therefore, different sectors including the government, educators, and civil society must come together to safeguard women’s rights and allow them in different spheres.
