Political interference

KARACHI:

The Punjab University in Lahore has gained notoriety for political involvement in the institution’s internal affairs. Student unions and political parties have been accused of stirring controversies at the university. Some allege that PML-N has been interfering with the recruitment of university administration i.e., vice chancellor and registrar and influencing important decisions.

These accusations have raised concern about the quality of education and academic freedom amongst the student body. Political elements have argued that party involvement is necessary to maintain the integrity of the institution and to ensure that it remains committed to the goals of national development and progress. Educational institutes should be independent, and student and faculty interests must be prioritised. Faculty and administration must be recruited on a merit basis.

Students should be allowed to engage in a healthy debate over current affairs, but political ideologies should not be promulgated at institutes. Student unions can play an important role in representing and advocating for the collective interests of students. They can also help with improving interaction among students. Political parties should refrain from meddling in university affairs. Perhaps, the Higher Education Commission should monitor and regulate the recruitment and decision-making processes in universities to protect the interests of students and faculties.
