Let’s fight racism

Letter March 30, 2023
Let’s fight racism

KARACHI:

Racism and racial discrimination have been social illnesses throughout the history of humanity. All human beings are born free and should be offered equal rights, safe living conditions, and the opportunity to contribute to society. Unfortunately, racist and discriminatory policies and attitudes prevent people around the world from enjoying basic rights and freedoms.

Racism is often embedded in policies, laws, and societal practices. It is the idea that certain groups are inferior because of their language or cultural heritage. People also discriminate against others based on education, employment, etc. Racism in any form and at any level harms the social fabric of society. It needs to be tackled head-on to promote equality and allow all citizens to live a safe and dignified life. The United Nations has constantly urged countries to address racism and avoid spreading discriminatory ideologies.

Political leaders can play an important role in fighting racism. They should avoid perpetuating racist stereotypes and avoid using derogatory language against political opponents. Government institutions and public and private organisations must make a conscious effort to improve inclusivity and avoid giving precedence to one group over another. Everyone should raise their voice against injustices against minorities or vulnerable groups to eradicate social stigmas and protect everyone’s safety and well-being.
