University problems

KARACHI:

Despite being one of the largest public universities in the country, Karachi University (KU) has failed to facilitate its students properly. Many students from across the country move to Karachi to acquire their education at KU. Unfortunately, students’ education is frequently disturbed due to administrative issues and faculty disputes. Teachers often boycott classes over non-payment of salaries. Many departments do not have sufficient faculty to cater to all students. This shows that students are not being offered quality education.

Over the years, the number of students at the university has increased, but the university has failed to increase hostels or provide students with alternative accommodation options. Due to this, many students from outside of the city are forced to rent out rooms or apartments through private agencies and landlords, which is both unsafe and expensive. The university transportation service regularly encounters problems compelling students to use public or private transport to commute to and from the university further adding to their expenses.

At times, classrooms and other rooms in the university do not have furniture, lights, and fans. The university premises are rarely cleaned and there is no maintenance of services. The substandard campus conditions reflect badly on the university and have created a poor learning environment. Considering that KU is among some of the top universities in the country, the relevant authorities should take note of these issues and allocate sufficient funds to resolve the issues. The administration must address teachers’ grievances to avoid disruption to academic activities.
