Neglected province

Letter March 20, 2023
Neglected province

TURBAT:

Despite being rich in resources, most areas of Balochistan are underdeveloped and lack basic facilities. Citizens do not have access to basic healthcare. They are forced to travel to other parts of the country to seek treatment and surgeries for serious ailments, but this is not affordable for most people.

Despite the poor educational facilities across the province, Baloch youth have continued to prove themselves through their academic successes. Makran topped Balochistan in literacy rate and ranked 8th on the national level as per the 2017 census. Out of 34 districts, 6 districts in Balochistan have significantly improved literacy rates. Unfortunately, the absence of employment opportunities has compelled the youth to work in low-paying odd jobs to make ends meet. This has not only disillusioned the Baloch youth, but also resulted in high rates of poverty in the province. At times, some individuals resort to extreme measures such as suicide while others fall into crimes or illegal activities to earn money and support their families.

The provincial government is either oblivious to the plight of the citizens or does not care about the welfare of the people. But it needs to facilitate Balochistan’s residents by improving basic healthcare, education, and infrastructure. The youth should be provided with employment opportunities to protect their futures and well-being.
