Digital empowerment

LAHORE:

Much of Pakistani youth face significant difficulties in achieving financial independence due to a lack of employment opportunities, and regressive culture. Girls, particularly are faced with more obstacles due to conservative norms and values. Most girls are not allowed to pursue careers or employment after graduating. Even in this digital age, many women across the country lack access to digital devices and internet services, which prevents them from seeking financial independence.

Financial independence is particularly important for women as it provides them with a sense of autonomy and security. Even though many women participate in the labour force, they still lack agency within their homes. Gender discrimination and gender stereotypes in the workplace further prevent women from achieving success in their careers. Men are given higher precedence for promotion and leadership opportunities. Pakistani public and private organisations must dismantle gender stereotypes and promote gender equality in the workplace through inclusive policies.

Importantly, the government must improve women’s access to digital devices and services through empowerment projects. Women should be offered training to use digital devices and seek employment. Digital and financial empowerment are crucial for the entire population due to the ever-changing global dynamics. Therefore, the government should create awareness about freelancing and improve the availability of internet services across the country so that everyone can benefit and contribute to the country’s economic and social progress.
