Unhygienic living conditions

Unhygienic living conditions

KARACHI:

Most localities in Karachi lack a proper drainage system due to which sewage water is constantly spilling onto roads and pavements. Choked drains and uncovered manholes have led to constant water accumulation in our area. Pedestrians cannot cross the road without stepping in the dirty water. It is also affecting the condition of the roads and traffic in the area.

Due to the absence of widespread waste management and a lack of street cleaners and dustbins, heaps of garbage can be found on vacant plots, street corners, and footpaths across the city. The unhygienic conditions provide mosquitoes and diseases with a breeding ground. There is a constant foul smell in areas. Residents regularly fall sick and succumb to death. The water in the taps is also unsafe for use as the drainage lines are broken, which has raised the risk of water being mixed with the sewage water. Flies are swarming in the areas along with other insects.

The unhygienic living conditions have increased people’s problems. Despite lodging complaints and reminding authorities about repairs, little action has been taken to address the longstanding issues. Karachi Municipal Corporation, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, and Sindh Solid Waste Management need to take note of these issues and address them at their earliest to offer some relief to Karachi’s residents.
