Powerless in paradise

Powerless in paradise

KARACHI:

Load-shedding is a pervasive problem in Gilgit-Baltistan like other provinces of Pakistan. The region primarily depends on hydroelectric power generation, and the electricity demand frequently surpasses the supply during peak periods leading to power outages.

The load-shedding schedule in Gilgit-Baltistan varies based on seasonal changes, extreme weather conditions, and demand. During the winter months, when the demand for electricity surges, power outages last for several hours. This particularly affects lower and middle-income families who are unable to afford or access alternative sources of power due to their modest socioeconomic status. The impact of load-shedding is severe, particularly in remote areas where access to electricity is limited. It affects routine activities such as studying, working, cooking, and other essential chores. Power outages during Ramadan further intensify challenges for the people. A poignant reminder of last year’s Ramadan is having to break our fasts in the candlelight without hearing the call to prayer on the loudspeakers.

Despite the government’s efforts to tackle load-shedding in Gilgit-Baltistan by investing in new power generation projects and upgrading the existing infrastructure, the problem is likely to persist until sufficient electricity is generated to meet the increasing demand in the region. To minimise the impact of load-shedding during Ramadan, power companies should schedule load-shedding during non-peak hours. The government needs to do more than pay lip service to resolve the issue. It should continue investing in power generation and infrastructure projects to improve the provision of electricity in the region.
