Emancipating women

Emancipating women

KARACHI:

The patriarchal structure of Pakistani society impedes women’s ability to exercise their rights and attain freedom. Women have little agency and are forced to live according to the dictates of the men around them. From a young age, girls face discrimination in their homes and schools where boys are given higher precedence for education and other opportunities.

Women in far-flung rural and remote areas are faced with several barriers to education and have little autonomy. The constant perpetuation of gender stereotypes prevents women from seeking education or employment. They are instead confined to their homes and given home-making and caring responsibilities. They remain unaware of their rights with regard to marriage, inheritance, etc.

Even though many women have dismantled the gender stereotypes and made strides in education and their careers, a lot more needs to be done to fully emancipate women across the country. Activists and rights groups need to extend their efforts to women across the country and give voice to those women who have little access to the outside world. This includes women in rural and tribal areas who are constrained by cultural norms and values. Political leaders need to do more than just pay lip service when it comes to women’s rights. They need to ensure strict implementation of laws and regulations to safeguard women. Public and private organisations need to adopt a non-discriminatory approach to hiring and promoting employees. Everyone needs to work towards empowering women and ensuring their safety and security to achieve a just and equal society.
