KARACHI:
Street crimes have risen at an alarming pace in Karachi and in other parts of the country. Within two months of 2023, more than 140 incidents of street crimes have been reported in Karachi. The criminals are targeting citizens indiscriminately. People have been looted in broad daylight at gunpoint. Citizens losing their hard-earned money and other valuables have become a norm in the city.
The robbers and snatchers do not even bother covering their faces anymore and kill victims without any hesitance. Clearly, they do not fear the authorities. Every day we come across CCTV footage of snatching incidents wherein the culprit can be easily identified. Yet the police remain unable to trace them and recover people’s belongings. With a rise in inflation and a worsening economic situation, street crimes and robberies are expected to further increase.
In Karachi, the situation has aggravated to such an extent that residents find themselves constantly fearing for their lives. The rising lawlessness in the city has become a source of constant stress and frustration among the people. The poor security situation in the city reflects poorly on the country as Karachi is the economic hub of Pakistan. The federal and provincial authorities should urge law enforcement agencies to tackle the issue urgently and restore law and order in the city to offer some respite to the citizens of Karachi.
