Checks and balances

KARACHI:

Despite restrictions from municipal and district authorities, many people have built three and four-storey houses on small plots in different localities of Karachi. As per the law, ground plus construction requires formal approval from the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA). Even though the illegal constructions of the houses face the risk of demolition by authorities, people continue to build additional portions to either rent them out or for personal use.

These houses have become a source of congestion and chaos in residential areas. As more and more people move into the neighbourhoods, there is constant commotion and an increase in traffic affecting people’s livelihoods. Much of the city is already deprived of basic resources such as water and electricity supply, which are further exhausted. Illegal construction and overcrowding are also lowering the value of the area and the property. Many of these portions have not been constructed in accordance with proper safety and planning measures, which can result in hazardous living conditions and safety concerns for residents.

Thus, such construction should not be allowed as it affects the entire community and can have long-lasting consequences. With so many people constantly moving in and out of the neighbourhood, there are also increased security and safety threats. Relevant authorities should take note of this and monitor construction activity in residential areas. People should be urged to comply with the laws and strict action should be taken against those violating the laws.
