KARACHI:
Agriculture constitutes the largest sector of Pakistan’s economy. The sector produces major crops including cotton, wheat, sugarcane, etc. It employs nearly 40% of the country’s workforce. The sector has the potential to resolve the country’s economic woes as it can expand our exports, reduce dependence on imports, and drive growth in other sectors of the economy. Developing agro-based industries can add value to agricultural produce and create employment opportunities while investment in research and development can lead to increased productivity and higher-quality produce.
To leverage the potential of agriculture for economic growth, Pakistan must address the water scarcity issue, which is a major constraint on agricultural productivity. Water management should be improved by constructing dams and storage facilities. This will reduce water wastage and increase agricultural yields. Modern farming practices such as the use of high-yield seed varieties and fertilisers, investment in research and development, and the provision of better credit facilities and training programs for farmers can boost productivity.
In addition, farmers should be facilitated through improved access to markets, better cold storage facilities and transport networks. This will help them realise the full potential of their produce and enhance their bargaining power. The relevant government departments must address the challenges and promote development in agriculture as it can bolster economic growth and development as well as improve food security in the country.
