KARACHI:
With the summer season fast approaching, load-shedding has already begun in parts of Karachi. Despite being the economic capital of the country, the city has been experiencing hours-long load shedding for the past many years.
Power outages lasting up to 10 to 12 hours disrupt people’s daily routines. Factories and businesses are forced to operate on generators, which raises their costs compelling them to increase prices. Load shedding during peak hours results in a decline in customers visiting markets or shopping centres. Thus, reducing vendors’ profitability. School, college, and university students also face disruptions in classes. Power outages at homes further hamper their studies.
The public is already faced with many difficulties and the worsening electricity issues are adding to their woes. It is high time that the relevant authorities assumed some responsibility and acted against K-Electric. Load shedding should be reduced and people should be informed of the schedule beforehand. Karachi’s residents have already grown frustrated with the federal, provincial, and municipal authorities — failure to address the load-shedding issue will be met with anger and protests.
