Road accidents

KARACHI:

In recent years, the number of road accidents on the road connecting Gilgit-Baltistan and Islamabad-Rawalpindi has risen alarmingly, leading to serious injuries and fatalities. The challenging road conditions, mountainous terrain, poorly maintained vehicles along with reckless driving have all contributed to the high rate of accidents on this route.

The major causes of road accidents are over-speeding, lack of proper signage and road markings, and poor road conditions. The fitness certificate, which certifies that a vehicle is in good condition and safe to operate on the roads, is an essential document. However, many public service buses in the region are operating without proper fitness certificates putting the lives of passengers at great risk. The absence of fitness certificates can lead to several problems, such as mechanical failures, breakdowns, and accidents. Buses that are not properly maintained can have worn-out brakes, tires, and other safety equipment making them more prone to accidents. The mountainous terrain and winding roads of Gilgit-Baltistan, with sharp turns and steep inclines, pose a great challenge to drivers. Many drivers are not used to driving on these roads, and they often make dangerous mistakes leading to accidents.

Many drivers are in a rush to reach their destinations and drive at excessive speeds. They often miss signs indicating sharp turns, steep inclines, and other hazards leading to accidents. To prevent dangerous accidents, road infrastructure needs to be improved with proper signs and regular maintenance to ensure that the roads are in good condition. Local authorities need to enforce traffic laws to prevent reckless driving. To ensure the safety of passengers and the environment, the concerned departments must take swift action to address this issue and implement measures to ensure that all public service buses are properly maintained and have the proper fitness certificates.
