KARACHI:
The use of sifarish or a reference to getting things done is very common in Pakistan. It is present in almost all institutions and organisations allowing individuals to succeed or attain things without working for them. This has promoted a culture of nepotism and favouritism and violated meritocracy.
Selection based on sifarish has hindered the growth and potential of many deserving and talented individuals. It is extremely demotivating for those who do not have any links or connections with higher-ups. The sifarish culture has disillusioned much of our youth who now believe that simply acquiring degrees is not enough to gain employment and succeed in their careers. It has affected educational outcomes and increased drop-out rates. College and university students have lost confidence and are less inclined towards studying and working hard.
Individuals lacking experience, knowledge, and skills are hired based on personal preferences and references at highly competitive positions. More often than not, these individuals fail to perform, which explains why we have failed to achieve any progress or development. Across the country, vacant positions in both public and private organisations are regularly filled based on sifarish. Meanwhile, deserving graduates are left to either sit idly or take jobs they are overqualified for. It is high time that the government tackles the problem head-on by taking strict action against those engaged in such corrupt practices. All public and private organisations should be strictly directed to hire individuals based on merit and must be monitored by relevant government authorities.
