SINGANISAR:
The city of Turbat had just one public library, which was closed indefinitely during the Covid pandemic. Considering that Turbat is Balochistan’s second-largest city, and many students come here to study, the library played an important role in their education. Many students who could not afford expensive course and research books were able to acquire them free of cost from the library.
Given that the city already lacks good educational institutes, the sudden closure of the library will further push students away from reading and studying. The library provided several college and university students with a quiet and studious environment. During the exam season, many students frequented the library for preparation. Students also used the library to prepare for entry tests.
Libraries play an important role in inculcating a culture of reading and knowledge, which is why most developed countries invest in libraries and offer free access to citizens. It is unfortunate to see that while students from other provinces are progressing in their studies and careers, students in Balochistan are being held behind due to the negligence of the district administration. I urge the federal and provincial governments to reopen the library as well as create more libraries in Turbat and other cities of Balochistan. The Baloch youth should be allowed to seek education, pursue their dreams, and contribute back to the country.
