Covid response

Covid response

KARACHI:

The Covid pandemic struck Pakistan much later compared to many other countries around the world. Initially, most countries failed to grasp the intensity of the virus and did not take pre-emptive measures to curb its spread. However, the sudden increase in infection and death rates made it apparent that Covid was not viral flu. Given Pakistan’s frail healthcare system and high levels of poverty, the country faced the risk of widespread devastation.

However, the former PTI government responded promptly by creating the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) to monitor infection rates and undertake prevention measures. The government immediately imposed smart lockdowns to curb the transmission rates. In addition, Pakistan quickly acquired vaccines and initiated vaccination campaigns in almost all major cities. Pakistan received global praise for its management of the pandemic.

Given Pakistan’s large population, we could have faced an India-like situation. However, the former government’s prompt and comprehensive response set a good precedent and helped us avoid a major health crisis. With the emergence of another sub-variant of Covid, the incumbent government must urge the Ministry of Health to follow similar measures if the virus escalates. Strong management and governance are crucial in implementing strategies and averting large-scale challenges. Considering that, disease outbreaks and pandemics are expected to become more frequent in the coming years, the government should strengthen our healthcare department by investing in the latest technology and equipment to create our own medicines and vaccines.
