Digital detox

KARACHI:

Most people today have access to digital devices, which they use constantly. People are woken up by the alarm on their smartphones, they connect with people through social media applications, purchase things online, watch the news on the television, etc. It has become impossible to think of life outside of our devices.

This fixation on digital devices is affecting people’s physical and mental health. The youth spend most of their time using their devices and have no recreational hobbies. This has led to poor academic outcomes, unhealthy lifestyles, and increased vulnerability to anxiety and depression. Most teenagers and younger adults are unhappy with their lives because they constantly compare themselves with individuals they see on social media. They are more prone to fall prey to online groomers and other propaganda. Many social media users also experience feelings of isolation, anger over online content, and fear of missing out.

Therefore, people should reduce the time they spend on their digital devices. One way to do this is to schedule time away from devices by setting alarms to remind you to go on a walk or take a break from your screen. Deleting unnecessary applications from your phones and turning your phone off can help cut down phone usage. A digital detox can improve your focus, reduce stress, improve social interactions and help you utilise your time better.
