Promoting mental health

Promoting mental health

KARACHI:

Mental health is an important aspect of overall health and well-being. It affects an individual’s mindset, emotions, behaviour, and productivity. Given the fast-paced and demanding nature of today’s work environment, prioritizing, and promoting mental well-being is crucial. Employees who are mentally and emotionally well are more productive, have higher morale, and take fewer sick days. On the other hand, employees who experience mental health problems can struggle with work performance, face increased stress and anxiety, and may even face discrimination or stigma in the workplace.

Employers can play a vital role in promoting and supporting the mental health of their employees by creating a supportive work environment. This includes fostering a positive and inclusive culture, promoting open communication, and supporting work-life balance. Employees should be offered counselling services. Offices should either have support groups or mental health days to allow employees to share their challenges and learn ways to manage their mental health. A safe and confidential environment should be established as it can encourage employees to talk about their mental struggles as well as dismantle stigmas.

Employees should be informed about stress management through informative sessions to improve their understanding of mental health. Employers should emphasise healthy habits and behaviours both at the workplace and in their personal lives. A supportive work environment and strong mental health among employees will improve the overall success of an organisation. Therefore, both public and private organisations should undertake measures to promote mental well-being to protect employees and increase productivity.
