KARACHI:
The current learning environment is very different from what it used to be a couple of decades ago. The constant flow of information has compelled us to change our teaching methodologies by applying novel approaches. The use of technological tools to update and disseminate knowledge is highly significant. Along with conceptual understanding, teachers are expected to equip students with the ability to configure and interpret information. Nowadays, teachers need to consider many things before imparting knowledge. For instance, teaching content, time management, the use of different resources and appropriate technology, etc.
Visual literacy has gained a lot of popularity in the present learning environment. High levels of visual literacy refer to understanding visual information as well as communicating the information visually. A salient feature of visible details is continuity, i.e., we perceive the pieces as parts of a whole scenario. Visualisation can help students make their idea perceptible, and recognisable, and establish their thinking process. Visual learning can also improve accessibility to information. Tools such as concept maps, pictograms, and infographics are commonly used to explain complex concepts and communicate information.
With the advancement of digital technology, visuals and information are continuously growing on academic platforms and social media. Therefore, our educational institutes should adopt visual literacy and train teachers to use different tools to improve teaching and learning. This will not require high expenditure and can be adopted and implemented through planning and strategising within educational institutes.
