Worsening smog problem

Worsening smog problem

KARACHI:

Many cities across Punjab are now facing the smog problem. Lahore has been at the forefront of this issue as it has consistently ranked as the most polluted city in the world. The intense smog has disrupted people’s daily routines compelling them to stay home. Flights have been cancelled and commuting by road is also restricted to prevent any accidents.

Health professionals claim that there will be an increase in the number of asthma patients as well as other diseases due to intensifying smog. People are facing breathing issues, and skin and eye irritation. The government announced school and office closures in Lahore for additional two days, but this is not a permanent solution to the issue. Many people are still compelled to leave their homes for different chores.

The main reason for the worsening smog issue is the high levels of industrial and vehicular emissions coupled with stubble and waste burning. Each year, the government waits until the winter to act against smog, it is high time that it takes pre-emptive measures early on to reduce air pollution. The government needs to find an alternative to crop burning as it is the largest contributor to black carbon. Considering that industrial cities like Karachi are also facing high levels of pollution, factories should be urged to switch to renewable practices to limit chemical and hazardous emissions. Vehicles should be tested for their smoke emissions and the public should be encouraged to use public transport. Everyone must take the issue in earnest as it will pose a severe threat to our health and survival in the coming years.
