Political gimmicks

KARACHI:

For decades, we have witnessed the abuse of power and authority under parliamentary democracy. The ongoing political turmoil does not concern the masses who are struggling to afford two square meals to survive. The loot and plunder of the political elite have brought the country to this juncture.

The local bodies’ election in Karachi has further exemplified the politicians’ selfish interests. Despite clashes and accusations of rigging, the PPP has once again emerged successful. Of the 235 union committees (UCs) up for grabs, PPP bagged 93, Jamaat-e-Islami 86, PTI 40, PML-N 7, etc. Perhaps, there should be a re-run of elections between the two parties that have secured a higher number of votes to install a fully empowered mayor who would not succumb to political gimmicks and prioritise the city’s welfare.

Given that Karachi is the economic hub of the country, it should have an autonomous local government. This ongoing political musical chair is only harming the country and further dividing the people, it is time that the country’s welfare is put at the centre.
