KARACHI:
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has recently revised the fee structure of the University of Turbat causing stress among many students as they cannot afford the increased fees. Students from across Balochistan come to this university to seek higher education at an affordable cost. However, the new fee structure will compel many students to drop out and reduce future enrolment rates.
Higher education enables personal development and equips individuals with the skills and knowledge that improve their prospects. It promotes economic, technological and social change allowing countries to enhance development. Unfortunately, high levels of inflation in Pakistan have forced many families to reconsider their priorities. Naturally, daily necessities take precedence over higher education. Even though many students work part-time to contribute to their university expenses, most will not be able to arrange their fees in time. There are also differences in fee structure based on the courses and departments. It is particularly unfair for final-year students who have already paid hefty amounts for their education.
Earlier, the federal government announced plans to introduce a reimbursement scheme for deserving and needy students in Balochistan. However, they rolled back on their decision amid the worsening economic situation. Given the high levels of poverty and deprivation in Balochistan, the people deserve some respite in the form of improved access to education. The HEC must revisit its decision and offer students some leverage. The Baloch youth should be facilitated through scholarships and reimbursements to continue their education and contribute to the country.
