KARACHI:
Even though Pakistan is a signatory of the Basel Convention, many wealthy countries export hazardous waste to the country. Approximately, 954,000 metric tonnes of unlawful yearly average e-waste are imported to Pakistan. Hazardous waste import coupled with an increase in industrial activity has raised the risks of harmful waste contaminating our water bodies.
The country is already running out of water and with a majority of the water supply contaminated this will further intensify the issue. It also poses a serious threat to the environment and human health. For instance, disease outbreaks may become more frequent. The federal and provincial governments must implement urgent measures to monitor and regulate industrial activity and ensure that the necessary safety protocols are being followed.
Environmental campaigns should be implemented to raise awareness. The government should encourage the use of sustainable and green practices to reduce the amount of hazardous waste generated. The federal government should restrict the import of hazardous waste for disposal but must permit it for co-processing, reuse, and recycling. The federal government must also make sure that data for the import, transit and illegal transportation of waste is properly recorded and maintained.
