KARACHI:
The fast-deteriorating economic situation coupled with looming food insecurity has raised alarm and agitation among the masses. A few days ago, a labourer in Mirpurkhas lost his life while trying to collect a subsidised bag of flour. Sindh government officials’ disorganisation and mismanagement led to a stampede resulting in the dismal event.
In opposition, all parties make tall claims. However, once in power, they fail to live up to their promises just like their predecessors. This political blame game has been going on for decades now. As always, it is the masses who are suffering. The situation is now coming to a head as the economy is continuously dwindling but there is no relief for the poor. Those living in abject poverty are on the brink of starvation and eventual eradication. While many others who once led a modest life have been dragged towards severe deprivation.
The incident in Mirpurkhas left many dejected and hopeless about the future. Such incidents will become more frequent in the coming months if those at the helm do not act responsibly. The government must curb the prices of essential commodities, especially flour and sell subsidised items in an organised manner to avoid stampedes. The government must not neglect the masses and allow them to lead dignified lives.
