National consensus

LARKANA:

A general consensus among politicians and the public on critical issues, collective decision-making, and policies that promote everyone’s well-being is crucial for any country. Unfortunately, since Pakistan’s inception, national consensus over the complex challenges faced by the country is missing. This has widened the disconnect and distrust among political parties and between politicians and the public. Political parties have always been engaged in criticising and accusing each other of corruption, rising inflation, poor policymaking, etc rather than collectively resolving issues.

The dwindling economy, political instability, security threats, rising poverty, inflation, and brain drain have entangled the country into a major crisis. The inability of all stakeholders to put their interests aside and work for the betterment of the country has raised frustration and anger among the masses. An exchange of ideas on national and international issues among stakeholders can play a significant role in achieving prosperity and sustainability in the country.

A democratic country only progresses when there is a national consensus among the country’s leadership. The public should be included in the various decisions over social and economic issues. The voters should also hold their elected representatives accountable. To steer the country out of the crisis, a national consensus is required to address the economic woes and rising external and internal security challenges. Otherwise, the future of a crisis-hit country seems bleak.
