Poor job satisfaction

Letter January 04, 2023
Poor job satisfaction

KARACHI, PAKISTAN:

Few employment opportunities and a lack of job satisfaction often cause stress and despair among individuals and ultimately compel them to commit suicide. Although having a job is considered an accomplishment, employees must be satisfied in their positions to maintain good health and well-being. Nowadays, most jobs are demanding and mentally taxing and offer little leisure time. Even if employees are being paid well, they still require time off from work to relax and rejuvenate. Otherwise, they feel overwhelmed and burnt out. Consequently, individuals may find looking after themselves a task and fail to take care of their mental and physical health.

Employers and organisations must realise that employees should not be overburdened with work. Once an employee has left their office premises, they should not be expected to fulfil tasks. Boundaries should be established so that employees can maintain a balance between their personal and professional lives. A healthy work environment should be established, and employees should be involved in decision-making processes to improve job satisfaction.

High job satisfaction among employees will not only improve work quality, but employees are less likely to feel frustrated or distressed. They will not fall prey to mental illnesses and suicide. Organisations with high suicide rates can experience a decline in overall productivity and motivation. Therefore, workplaces should promote a healthy work culture by supporting employees through counselling and workshops. Job security and a good work environment can go a long way in curbing depression and suicide rates.
