Street crimes in Karachi

Letter December 26, 2022
???

KARACHI:

Since the start of this year, Karachi has witnessed an uptick in street crimes and robberies. Many citizens have lost their lives in incidents of street crimes. The law enforcement agencies’ inability to trace criminals coupled with burgeoning inflation and rising unemployment have resulted in a surge in crime rates across the country.

The situation in Karachi is particularly alarming as citizens no longer feel safe even within their homes. Recently, a third-year student at NED University was killed while resisting snatching. Snatchers and dacoits have adopted all sorts of tactics, which has raised fear among the citizens. Crimes are being carried out in broad daylight in crowded places.

Citizens have lost their vehicles, phones, and other valuables. Law enforcement agencies appear to be helpless in addressing the worsening security situation in the city. The provincial government needs to act urgently and urge the police to restore law and order in Karachi.
