Neglected social workers

Neglected social workers

KARACHI:

In social sciences, the discipline of social work is practical and theoretical. It aims to enhance the development of human potential and fulfil human needs to improve individuals’ psychological well-being. Most social workers directly engage with clients to diagnose their concerned problems. In short, social work discipline focuses on theoretical frameworks, and components such as mental health, trauma, addiction, juvenile delinquency, child and labour welfare, etc. Part of the curriculum also includes working hands-on with clients through a field education experience, internship, or supervised practicum.

Recently, Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC) announced 45 posts of Assistant Director in the Social Welfare Department (BPS-17). To my surprise, the commission had entirely overlooked the social work discipline. According to the advertisement, the discipline of Sociology, which is the most prominent discipline, was mentioned in the eligibility criteria. It is an utter injustice to sideline an entire discipline. Social work graduates have in-depth knowledge and experience in working with a range of people and dealing with different situations.

Therefore, the concerned authorities should include the discipline of Social Work in their eligibility criteria, especially for the post of Assistant Director (BPS 17) Social Welfare Department. This will secure the futures of thousands of social work degree holders as well as diversify the department’s expertise and improve its service.
