KARACHI:
Global warming is a global issue, which has compelled governments and individuals around the world to join hands to curb this overwhelmingly increasing issue. Environmentalists have repeatedly urged governments to reduce the excessive installation of factories and avoid manufacturing cars emitting hazardous smoke and gases. Many countries are switching to alternative environment-friendly energy resources to reduce the risks of global warming.
Environmentalists have also pressured governments to plant trees and avoid deforestation to reduce the risk of greenhouse effects damaging the ozone layer. Unfortunately, in Khairpur Mirs, dozens of trees have been cut down to build modern infrastructure. These trees were as old as the Talpur dynasty and symbolised their rule and the glorious heritage of the region. The trees were planted on either side of the road covering a large distance. They added to the beauty of the area, which now lies barren.
Across the country, green belts, mangrove forests, and fruit farms have been cleared out to develop housing societies, roads, and highways. However, this infrastructure will not protect the country from climate-related emergencies. The provincial and district governments should take notice of deforestation activities and take strict action against those engaging in illegal logging. The government must urge people to avoid cutting trees for fuelwood and provide them with other alternatives.
