Suicide cases

Letter December 21, 2022
Suicide cases

KARACHI:

Across Balochistan, there has been a surge in suicides. Just a few weeks ago, a young girl committed suicide after failing her medical entrance test. A lack of opportunities and poor living conditions in the province have made the youth particularly vulnerable to depression, anxiety, and despair. They have little hope for any betterment in the future.

Conservative culture and a lack of awareness of mental health support have amplified the issue. Individuals experiencing depressive symptoms do not seek professional help and resort to suicide when they cannot bear the symptoms. Considering this, the health authorities should improve awareness and access to mental health support and rehabilitation services. Families should avoid shaming their children for not performing well in education or committing minor mistakes. We must protect our youth and offer them support and compassion.
