Protecting the mountains

KARACHI:

Approximately 50% of the world’s wildlife, forests, and national parks are in the mountains. Around one billion people live in mountains and their valleys. Most of the world’s population relies on water and agriculture from mountains i.e., springs, rivers, or streams. Thus, it is essential to take good care of this natural wealth and raise public awareness to preserve the mountains. Each year, International Mountain Day (IMD) is celebrated worldwide to draw people’s attention to mountains and populations living near mountains. The purpose is to highlight how the impact of climate change on mountainous regions in recent decades. People living close to mountains face extreme conditions, and glaciers are melting faster than ever.

Unlike most countries, Pakistan has both snow peaks and other mountain ranges that offer the country resources and natural beauty. The country has five snowy peaks that are nearly 26,000 feet. The second-highest peak in the world, K2, and the ninth-highest peak, Nanga Parbat are also located in Pakistan. Therefore, it is essential to develop the infrastructure in surrounding areas to improve the livelihoods of those living near mountains and potentially increase tourism through better promotion.

The theme of this year’s IMD is “Women Move Mountains”, which underscores women’s critical role in protecting mountains and the environment. Pakistan must also increase women’s involvement in the social and economic development of the country. To do this, government organisations and NGOs shall arrange programs to highlight women’s role in local culture, traditional medicine, or climate viability. Increased participation of different socio-economic groups in decision-making can improve livelihoods and reduce the migratory trend. These efforts can also have a better outcome in preserving the environment.
