Effective teaching

KARACHI:

Considering that children begin their secondary socialisation at school, teachers play an important role in shaping their behaviours and attitudes. Thus, teachers have a responsibility to conduct themselves professionally around their students.

With time, teachers’ role has evolved, and students now expect teachers to have a more hands-on approach, especially at higher levels. Besides teaching the curriculum, teachers are expected to engage with students through interactive activities and help them develop critical thinking abilities and analytical skills. Teachers are also responsible for helping students choose their career paths and become better individuals overall.

Unfortunately, in Pakistan, most teachers do not receive formal training or qualifications before beginning their careers. Thus, they are not as effective as they should be. They fail to become good role models because they are overwhelmed with teaching responsibilities with little support from the school’s administration. Teachers are unable to address students’ needs due to which students often struggle with their studies. We need to move past the traditional teaching methods and incorporate new techniques such as interactive learning to allow teachers to build a good rapport with students. Educational institutes should support teachers through training and mentoring to ensure that teachers can have a positive impact on students.
