KARACHI:
The super floods in July battered several parts of Balochistan. Even now, two districts of the province are still inundated with water. Although some normalcy has been restored, the majority of the province has lost connection with the rest of the country. Internet broadband and mobile network services were already poor in the province and were entirely derailed after the floods. Roads and highways connecting Balochistan to other parts of the country remain damaged.
While some people have been able to return to their homes, many are still forced to live in makeshift shelters. Unsanitary conditions and an absence of healthcare support have increased risks of diarrhoea, tuberculosis, and other waterborne diseases. Pregnant women and children are faced with higher health risks
Given that many regions of Balochistan were already deprived of basic facilities, the floods further aggravated the situation. The winter season will add to peoples’ miseries as they await aid and other supportive items to protect them from the harsh weather. I urge the federal and provincial governments to the flow of aid and ensure that people return to their homes as soon as possible.
