Drug abuse

KARACHI:

Pakistan ranks among the countries most affected by drug consumption. According to the United Nations, the total number of drug addicts in Pakistan is 7.6 million of which 78% are male. Each year, the number of drug addicts increases by 40,000.

Most people begin abusing drugs as a temporary means of escape from daily stresses but eventually form an addiction. In recent years, teenagers and young adults have become the main victims of drug abuse due to academic pressure, social media trends, societal expectations, responsibilities, etc. Drug traffickers target younger individuals, particularly college and university students to trade drugs. University administrations have failed to prevent the buying and selling of drugs on and near campuses, which has intensified the issue. Drug addiction not only affects an individual’s mental health but also harms physical health causing liver damage and other long-term conditions.

To alleviate this menace, university administrations should work with law enforcement agencies to restrict the trade of drugs on campuses. Parents should be vigilant of the activities of their children and speak to their children if they witness any behavioural changes. Public awareness campaigns informing people about the consequences of drug abuse can also help in tackling the problem.
