Unskilled population

Unskilled population

KARACHI:

Despite having a large population, Pakistan has failed to benefit from high productivity due to a poor education system and an absence of training and skills development programmes. Countries like India and China have expanded their economic development by investing in education at all levels. This has allowed them to equip their population with adequate knowledge and skills to be able to participate in the workforce.

Both countries have become major avenues for investment because of their skilled workforce. Therefore, the Pakistani government must also reform education and introduce skills development and training programmes to allow the youth to enhance their employability. We must expand and introduce newer fields, particularly Information Technology (IT). The IT industry is already booming and will be crucial for future development and innovation. Thus, we must invest in the sector.

Educational institutes should work with public and private organisations to launch internships and apprenticeships to provide the youth with relevant work experience during their studies. To compete globally and attract foreign investment, we must facilitate our future generations.
