KARACHI:
Faiz Ahmad Faiz is undoubtedly the last of the Mohicans in impacting the realm of Urdu poetry. Like Ghalib, Faiz is also a nonconformist and thus a breed apart from the rest of the classical Urdu poets. Faiz’s entire political and romantic poetry is not only innovative but also soul stirring and enthralling.
Faiz had written a Nazm entitled Subh e Azadi on the Partition in 1947. Later in life, he wrote another Nazm known as Hum Dekhenge in 1979. Both these outpourings of Faiz have assumed an iconic place in the poetic world of defiance and unwavering hope. In fact, Hum Dekhenge has drawn inspiration from Surah e Rahman which is inimitable, lofty and lyrical. I want to share with the readers my tribute to Faiz in a couplet taking into account his optimism and the current putrid political scenario in the country.
Itna huwa hai Faiz tumharay kalam sai
Akhir bahar ayee hai lekin khiza kay saath
