Traffic issues

Traffic issues

KARACHI:

Poor urban planning and substandard road infrastructure have caused traffic problems across the country. During the peak hours, the majority of the roads in Lahore are in utter chaos and people are stuck in hours-long traffic jams daily. The traffic police are mere bystanders as they do not stop drivers violating traffic rules.

The University of Central Punjab in Lahore, which is close to Shaukat Khanum Chowk is crowded with vehicles, particularly from morning till evening. Professors and students are regularly late for classes and encounter several difficulties in parking their vehicles and walking to and from the university premises. Double parking and street vendors have further reduced space on the road causing severe congestion.

Most areas with educational institutes and shopping centres are faced with a chaotic traffic situation. One reason for this is illegal parking and the negligence of authorities to take action against drivers. The traffic police have also failed to implement traffic guidelines. I urge the relevant authorities to take notice of the worsening traffic conditions in the city and devise a plan to control and regulate the flow of the traffic.
