Dengue threat

KARACHI:

In October, the number of dengue cases crossed 10,000 in the country. Unfortunately, both the government and the public failed to take the threat seriously and avoided implementing precautionary measures. Resultantly, we are witnessing a constant surge in infections.

Flood-affected regions are faced with a more serious risk as some parts are still submerged in water, which has provided a breeding ground for mosquitos and other water-borne diseases. People do not have access to proper sanitation and are compelled to store water in containers. The absence of proper healthcare support has further aggravated the problem. Many cities including Karachi, Peshawar, and Rawalpindi have also reported high infection rates. Emergency wards and intensive care units in hospitals are now flooded with dengue patients.

The rise in dengue cases is alarming as it is putting a strain on healthcare resources and resulting in fatalities, which could have been easily avoided. The government must amplify efforts to curb infections by urging municipal authorities to carry out widespread fumigation. People should avoid storing water in containers and drain out accumulated water. People in flood-affected areas should be provided with mosquito nets and other safety items to protect themselves against diseases.
