Science and peace

KARACHI:

In December 1988, the United Nations General Assembly declared the annual observance of International Week of Science and Peace (IWOSP) during the week in which November 11 falls. IWOSP was introduced in response to the dangers associated with the cold war and the rivalry of nuclear arms, especially in the context of the modernisation of warfare in the early 1980s.

IWOSP aims to encourage more academic exchanges about the insightful linkage of science and technology with culture and civilisation. These aspects include peace, security, and socioeconomic development. IWOSP upholds the need to promote awareness about the usefulness of science and technology to increase global harmony, the promotion of human rights, and the protection of the environment.

The annual observance of the IWOSP has contributed to promoting peace. Its global commemoration will increase contributions to greater international understanding and opportunities for cooperation in science to promote lasting peace. This year’s theme for IWOSP is “Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.” Owing to the prevailing conditions of the food and energy crisis in Pakistan, the intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations should encourage relevant institutions, associations, and individuals to sponsor events and activities related to the study and dissemination of information on the links between progress in science and technology and the maintenance of peace, security, and social well-being of the masses.
