Winter drives

Winter drives

KARACHI:

The arrival of the winter season is a major concern for many people across the country who lack the resources to provide themselves and their families with support and comfort during the season. Predictions of rains are particularly worrisome as many people in flood-affected areas are still living under open skies while several others are living in makeshift tents.

Given that our society is known for its generosity and philanthropic efforts, we must ensure that we support the less-fortunate citizens. Civil society and civic and non-governmental organisations should step up efforts to donate to the flood victims as well as homeless people and rough sleepers. People should either individually donate or partake in winter drives to provide people with food, clothes, and shelter to reduce their hardships. Instead of expecting the government to do everything on its own, we must lend the government a helping hand at this crucial time. People donating items should avoid donating random clothes and specifically donate warm clothing along with blankets and quilts.

The government should draw up a comprehensive plan for flood-affected areas, particularly because some of these areas are still inundated with water and faced with disease outbreaks. Therefore, people will require additional medical assistance. The government and all those engaged in donation drives should also arrange for portable heaters and other supportive equipment.
