Karachi needs ownership

Karachi needs ownership

KARACHI:

Apropos the news titled ‘Dilapidated roads main cause of rising backache, joint pain cases’ in your newspaper, it is heartening to note that this important issue is getting attention. Although rheumatologists believe that there has been a 30% increase in cases of back and hip pain over the last six months. I think this number is much higher because majority of the people opt for home remedies or self-medication when they feel backache or joint pains and visit a doctor or medical only when their condition worsens and pain becomes unbearable. As broken roads are causing joint pain, supply of unfit drinking water full of impurities is causing waterborne diseases like diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, hepatitis, typhoid, gastroenteritis, etc. Heaps of garbage lying on the pathways is another issue of the city. Many residents are unaware about garbage disposal techniques and they burn the garbage. This burning garbage causes environmental degradation and also creates problems for asthmatics. These are some of the very few problems of Karachi. Sad reality is that the most populous city of the country becomes the most miserable and is turning into an orphan city as no one is willing to take ownership of it.

The sitting Sindh government of PPP has been ruling the province for more than 14 years but their behaviour and attitude towards Karachi is highly unsatisfactory. They treat Karachi like a cash cow i.e. they enjoy the resources of Karachi but when it comes to investing back, they look elsewhere. The negligence of the Sindh government has made Karachi one of the least livable cities of the world. It is high time that all stakeholders joined hands and worked in cohesion on a war footing in order to revive the lost glory of Karachi
