KARACHI:
The ongoing political contestation between the government and the opposition has created a tense political atmosphere in the country. It has side-lined all other issues that are affecting the public. The country lacks a coherent and comprehensive economic policy to address the two most pressing issues i.e., inflation and unemployment.
In the last six months, the prices of edible items have nearly doubled with unemployment continuously surging. The constant energy price hikes have further added to people’s problems. Lower and middle-income families are struggling to make ends meet but the government appears to be oblivious to the public’s woes.
The recent flooding has further worsened the economic conditions; therefore, both the government and the opposition must set their political differences aside and prioritise economic reformation. The government must take necessary measures to reduce inflation and facilitate local industries to create employment and increase exports. It must also work with local industries to attract foreign investment.
