Police performance

KARACHI:

In this age of technology, one would expect the police force to be better equipped to address crimes and recover snatched mobiles and other valuables. However, the Karachi police appear to be as incompetent as ever in their ability to alleviate street crimes and robberies. In the last few months, Sindh’s capital has witnessed a huge spike in street crimes, robberies, and murders in case of resistance. Resultantly, Karachi’s residents find themselves in a constant state of fear and have no guarantee that they will return to their homes safely.

The worsening security conditions in the metropolis have exposed the incompetence of our policing system. Daily many offenders carry out robberies and muggings and go scot-free. Our police appear to be stuck in a systematic dilemma as their systems are outdated and they have failed to adopt a modern methodology to address the fast-deteriorating security situation.

The police commonly claim that snatched items are nearly impossible to recover due to which most victims see little purpose in reporting the crimes. Those who can afford to resort to purchasing new items. However, this is a complete injustice as Karachiites continue to lose their money and valuables due to the poor performance of those who should protect them. It is high time that the provincial government and municipal authorities urge the police to adopt a responsible attitude and develop an effective strategy to address street crimes and restore the public’s confidence in the police.
