KARACHI:
The constant surge in crimes across Kandhkot coupled with the incompetence of state institutions to curb the crime rate has raised fear among the residents of the city. Kandhkot, a tehsil in district Kashmore of Sindh province, has become a breeding ground for all sorts of criminal activities. Mugging, robberies, abductions, and murders, if the abductor’s demands are not met, have become commonplace. Earlier this year, a three-year-old kid was abducted outside his house and recovered three months later during a police operation. Similarly, a student was kidnapped and recovered during an operation. Unfortunately, a poor labourer kidnapped from Kandhkot was found slain in fields on the outskirts of the city three days after his abduction.
To make matters worse, the relevant authorities have turned a blind eye to the ever-increasing crimes in the city, which has offered the culprits leeway to continue their activities. They conduct robberies and abductions in broad daylight and roam freely with impunity. Many have questioned the legitimacy of police operations and there is a widespread perception that the families of the abductees are paying huge amounts of ransom to recover their family members. The lack of trust between the public and state institutions will cause further unrest and chaos in the city. Therefore, the police must assume responsibility and act against the culprits to restore peace and security in the city.
