UNGA session

UNGA session

KARACHI:

The UN General Assembly session is convened every year, which brings together heads of the member states to discuss the emerging challenges facing the world. Besides, the session allows leaders of the participating countries to highlight their individual cases to draw the attention of the world community and gather diplomatic support in favour of the cause from around the globe. This year’s session coincided with the devastating floods wreaking havoc across Pakistan. The session gave the country’s authorities an opportunity to remind the world of their climate injustices whose repercussions are faced by the countries sending minimal greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

While meeting on the sidelines of the UNGA session, the PM urged the global community to support the country in rehabilitating flood-ridden families. The PM has rightly reminded the world community that it is their moral obligation to extend the required aid not as a favour to the country but in terms of reparations for causing devastation to the natural climate due to their greedy economic policies. The world leaders, including the US President, have advocated for the cause asking the world leaders to support the country generously in fighting the menace. Moreover, calls for writing off debts of the vulnerable nations have been gathering steam, as echoed by the US President as well in his address to the assembly.

The country’s bigwigs should not stop here but expand diplomatic efforts and launch aggressive campaigns urging the world to support Pakistan in difficult times. Furthermore, instead of spending billions of rupees on mega projects under PSDP, the planning managers should divert all funds to support the distressed families for their permanent rehabilitation.
