What makes a good school!

KARACHI:

There are so many myths revolving around us regarding good schools. One of them is that a good school is one which has a majestic building, large classrooms, huge playgrounds, decent cafeteria, and so on. But this is not the actual definition of a good school. Even though the above-mentioned elements are the requirement of a good school, but having a gigantic building does not necessarily make a school good. Another myth is: a good school is one which ensures good grades. Getting good grades is essential with respect to getting a good job, but we must also make sure our child does get to learn and gain knowledge at the school. Parents must understand that grades do not necessarily define the potential of a child.

Also, many parents give priority to a school where their children can learn to speak English fluently, completely ignoring the importance of mother tongue. This is the main reason why our national language, Urdu, as well as regional languages are being gradually forgotten. A big number of our children don’t know how to count in Urdu, Punjabi or Sindhi. They can’t name colours, for instance, in their mother tongue. All these myths make the wrong definition of a good school. So, we must avoid these falsely defined good schools, and depend on schools which develop our children holistically — physically, intellectually, academically, socially, emotionally, and morally.
