Dangerous underpasses

Letter September 19, 2022
Dangerous underpasses

KARACHI:

On way to my destination, I frequently pass through three underpasses — at Gharibabad, Liaquatabad and Nazimabad — that form part of Karachi’s signal-free corridor one. These underpasses lead to Shershah and to the SITE — one of the industrial areas of the city. These underpasses are very dangerous to travel through, for a variety of reasons: one, there is no lighting arrangement inside; two the roads are broken at places and riddled with potholes to give you a bumpy ride; and three, these dark and unkept arteries are a hot favourite of street criminals. I have often seen accidents occurring in these badly-lit and broken underpasses. I call upon the Sind government as well as the KMC to carry out carpeting of the underpasses and make proper lighting arrangements so as to avoid loss of lives in any traffic mix-up and save the commuters from being mugged.
