SUKKUR:
Deforestation is rapidly increasing in flood-affected areas of interior Sindh, including Union Council Sangrar of Sukkur district, due to the continued failure of the authorities to supply natural gas there. Villagers have no other option but to use forest wood for cooking. Before the floods devastation, a large number of families used to stock cotton crop sticks to light up stoves and to keep themselves warm in the winter. But the recent floods have completely devastated the cotton crop; and now people have started cutting trees to use them to fulfil their needs. The Sindh government and the Sui Southern Gas Company must ensure adequate supply of natural gas to rural parts of the province so that the local people are not compelled to depend on firewood.
